N.O.T.E.

NOTE is the winning project of the competitive bid of the Agency for Territorial Cohesion, created with the aim of combating educational poverty in the South of Italy. The project involves various local players, including the Giulio Rodinò Comprehensive School, the lead partner Seme di Pace, the Giampaglia Comprehensive School, Variabile K, La Locanda di Emmaus and the Herculaneum Archaeological Park.

The NOTE project aims to provide innovative educational opportunities that foster the personal, cultural and social development of young participants through a series of workshops for children aged 7-10.

Starting in October 2024 NOTE will begin, with the goal of involving a total of 160 children. Each workshop comprises 10 meetings lasting three months.
The workshops are divided into two types and are designed to stimulate creativity, historical awareness and care for the local heritage and public spaces:

1. The Life of the Ancestors

An interactive journey to discover the daily life of the ancient Romans. The meetings are divided into a theoretical part with stories and projections and a practical part with manual activities related to the themes dealt with, using materials such as painting, cardboard, dice and small jewellery.
Visits to the Herculaneum Archaeological Park are an integral part of the itinerary in order to observe the finds at close quarters, to encourage immersion in the historical narrative and to stimulate a sense of belonging.

Goals:

  • To deepen the history and culture of ancient Herculaneum, from daily habits to religion, from clothing to cosmetics.
  • To strengthen the link between the territory and its historical heritage.
  • To make the children aware of the value of the local heritage and the importance of protecting it.

Workshop phases:

  • Visits to the Herculaneum Archaeological Park: during the visits, topics such as the history of the excavations, religion, clothing, cosmetics, the structure of dwellings and how the ancient Romans lived in the ancient city will be addressed.
  • Workshops linked to visits to the Herculaneum Archaeological Park: children will use recycled materials to recreate the features and artefacts of ancient Herculaneum.

2. Participatory Architecture and Care of Common Places

This project aims to involve the students in the redevelopment and transformation of the school's interior and exterior spaces through participatory design activities. Together with the Variabile K team, the students will be protagonists in the design and creation of urban furniture and decorations, transforming common spaces into more functional and creative places by adapting them to the needs of the community.

Goals:

  • Encourage creativity and a sense of belonging to the territory.
  • Teach the value of teamwork, handicrafts and manual know-how.
  • Promote the care of common places.

Workshop phases:

  • Analysis and co-design: Observation of spaces and needs, mapping and development of project ideas.
  • Planning and proposals: Project definition, cost analysis and organisation of activities.
  • Self-Construction: children will directly participate in transforming spaces through activities such as planting, urban painting and carpentry.

These workshops are designed to provide a personalised, conscious and recreational educational experience for participating students.
The NOTE project combines historical learning with active participation in the enhancement of public spaces to promote a deeper connection between the community and the cultural and local heritage of Herculaneum.
